Putting Education First

Joe Fitzgerald for Middletown, NJ Board of Education 2025

About Me

I am a proud U.S. Military Veteran, having served 8 years in the United States Marine Corps, including two overseas deployments. During my service, I earned the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and multiple letters of commendation. Service taught me discipline, teamwork, and the importance of mission focus — values I now bring to my role in education.

Beyond my military service, I’m most proud of being a father of three school aged children. My two youngest attend Navesink Elementary, and my oldest is enrolled in the LLD program at Bayshore Middle School. As a parent, I share the same hopes and concerns as every family in our community.

I currently serve as an elected member of the Board of Education, where I’ve learned how to:

· Manage budgets responsibly so we never face another emergency like the one in 2025.

· Work with board members, central office, and the community to solve problems collaboratively.

· See firsthand what our schools truly need in today’s world: a return to basics in education.

My Goals for Our Schools

· Focus on Core Academics: Every student deserves a strong foundation in reading, writing, math, and science — the skills that open doors to any path they choose. I will ensure our curriculum is rigorous and aligned with college and career readiness.

· Support the Trades: Not every student wants or needs a four-year degree. We must expand vocational and trade programs in our high schools, so students graduate with hands-on skills and real job opportunities.

· Keep Politics Out of the Classroom: Schools should be centers of learning, not political battlegrounds. I will oppose curriculum or programs that push divisive agendas and refocus education on academics, not ideology.

Where I Stand

· I am against Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as it often serves as a vehicle for introducing controversial concepts like Critical Race Theory (CRT), racial inequality debates, gender identity, and sexual orientation into classrooms. SEL displaces essential academic subjects and shifts focus from traditional education to social issues.

· I am against Policy 5756, which removes a parent’s right to be informed about significant developments in their child’s life. This policy undermines the constitutional right of parents to direct their children’s upbringing.

My Commitment

I believe parents, teachers, and communities know best — not bureaucrats or special interests. Together, we can restore excellence, balance, and common sense to our schools.
